Getrag is the world’s largest supplier of transmission systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
They experienced a problem where the production effluent had become contaminated and could not be treated by the site’s own effluent treatment plant. The effluent was therefore being contained and transported off site for treatment.
The Overall Objective
The Getrag facility generated about 5m³/hr of effluent, and with all available storage capacity being full, they required the means to treat the effluent temporarily, and to achieve a compliant discharge to sewer as soon as possible in order to stop expensive tankering, and to treat all the stored effluent.
SPS conducted an initial assessment on site and took samples for conducting laboratory testwork and bench-scale treatment tests on a quick turnaround at its own laboratories. Chemical pre-treatment followed by DAF was quickly identified as the best solution.
A small lamella DAF system complete with pumping and chemical pre-treatment equipment was rapidly deployed, installed and commissioned. This enabled tinkering to stop almost immediately, and the client was able to treat all the contaminated material in compliance with the discharge consent to sewer.
The performance and relative simplicity of the system impressed the site so much that they continued to use it to treat normal production effluent in preference to the more complex and sometimes problematic existing site effluent treatment system. The client chose to purchase the equipment, which is now installed permanently, in preference to their original plant.
