pH Correction
pH correction is made safe and easy with the Siltbuster range of solutions from single stage reaction tanks through to integrated multi stage pH correction systems – to adjust either the pH to 7 neutral for discharge to the natural environment or to a pre-defined user set level if part of a wider treatment process. Traditionally, alkaline waters would be neutralised through the addition of strong mineral acids (such as hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric) or through organic acids such as citric. However, these reagents are notoriously difficult to control from an operational process perspective and require specialised PPE and personnel training before use due to the aggressive and corrosive properties of the compounds.
Moreover, the introduction of mineral acids into water results in the reagent’s corresponding anion being released – often creating a secondary pollutant that often exceeds acceptable environmental limits for discharge.
Siltbuster pH adjustment systems incorporate digital pH controllers and probes for the automatic and controlled introduction of vapour carbon dioxide for the correction of alkaline waters. Vapour carbon dioxide has a number of advantages when compared to mineral acids, namely:
- CO2 is stored in steel cylinders rather than vulnerable plastic IBCs
- Partly spent CO2 cylinders can be returned to the supplier at no extra cost
- CO2 is easier to control from a process perspective with a far gradual titration curve
- No specialised training or PPE is required for handling
- It is cheaper per m3 to neutralise waters with CO2 than mineral acids
- No secondary pollutants are introduced
- It is theoretically impossible to overdose and acidify waters using CO2 unlike the case with mineral acids
Siltbuster PMPU20
The Siltbuster PMPU20 is an integrated solution which comprises two dedicated reaction tanks and integral lamella clarifier for the multistage manipulation of pH levels and removal of suspended solids. This sequential treatment philosophy not only reduces the amount of reagent required per cubic metre of water, but also reduces the hardness/alkalinity and improves the treated water quality upon discharge.
The PMPU20 has a typical continuous operating range of up to 20m3/hr and also incorporates its own onboard peristaltic slurry pump controlled via an asymmetric timer for the disposal of the captured slurry or for its recirculation where users have a High-Density Sludge (HDS) so as to minimise underflow removal costs. The system can be configured to work with vapour carbon dioxide should an alkaline value be detected or used in conjunction with caustic solutions should the feed to be treated have an as received acidic value. Typical applications: Precipitated Solids Removal, High pH Water, Low pH Water, Hydrodemolition
Siltbuster DS4
The Siltbuster DS4 pH correction unit is a single-stage pH adjustment system which can be configured to correct the pH of either alkaline or acidic waters, capable of treating flow rates of up to 20 m³/hr.
When treating waters which also contain suspended solids, the Siltbuster DS4 pH adjustment unit can be operated in conjunction with a Siltbuster Lamella Settlement unit, as part of our wide range of plug and play modular fleet options.
- Single stage process with the option to be incorporated in a Siltbuster modular system
- To treat Acidic or Alkaline Water
- Operating range of 1 – 20m³/hr
- Small footprint with large capacity
- No harmful or dangerous substances used in the process
